What is the Immutability of God?

6 “For I am the LORD, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.”

Israel had been unfaithful for centuries.

They worshipped idols. They broke covenants. They exploited the poor. They offered lame sacrifices while keeping the best for themselves. Prophet after prophet warned them. They ignored every one.

By any reasonable measure, they deserved destruction.

But God said: “I am the LORD, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed.”

The reason Israel survived wasn’t their faithfulness. It was His.

Immutability means God does not change—His nature, His character, His purposes, His promises. He is not moody. He doesn’t grow or develop or improve. He doesn’t have good days and bad days.

What He was to Abraham, He is to you. What He promised David still stands.

This is radically different from every human relationship you’ve ever known. People change. Feelings fade. Commitments crumble. The person who loved you yesterday may be distant tomorrow.

God is not like this.

Peter denied Jesus three times by a charcoal fire on the worst night of his life. After the resurrection, Jesus met Peter by another charcoal fire and restored him three times.

Why? Because Jesus doesn’t change. The love that called Peter on the shores of Galilee was the same love that forgave his failure.

In a world where everything shifts—relationships, health, careers, circumstances—immutability is your anchor.
