What is the Patience of God?

Why hasn’t Jesus returned yet?

It’s been two thousand years. Generations have come and gone. Wars, plagues, disasters—history keeps grinding forward. Where is He?

Peter anticipated this question. In his second letter, he addressed skeptics who mocked: “Where is the promise of His coming? Everything continues as it has since the beginning.”

Peter’s answer: God is patient.

Not slow. Not forgetful. Not indifferent.

Patient.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise… but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”

Patience (Greek: makrothumia) means long-suffering, slow to anger, enduring without retaliation. God holds back judgment because He’s giving people time to repent.

Every day the world continues is another day of grace. Another opportunity for someone to turn to God. Another chance for a hardened heart to soften.

God’s patience is not passive tolerance. It’s active restraint. He has the power to end all rebellion instantly—but He waits. Because He values souls more than efficiency.

But patience has a limit. Peter goes on to say: “The day of the Lord will come.” Judgment is delayed, not canceled.

God’s patience is an invitation, not a guarantee of endless tomorrows.
