Rescued from Darkness

Colossians 1:13-14 paints a vivid picture of what God has done for humanity in Christ. The Apostle Paul tells us that, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

We often underestimate where we were before Christ. We weren’t just lost—we were enslaved. We lived under the rule of darkness, held captive by sin, unable to free ourselves. The kingdom of darkness is a kingdom of death, deception, and despair. And we had no power to escape it. We see the fruits of this nature and identity through out the Scriptures.

But God, in His great love, had a rescue plan long before we fell. Through Christ, He broke into the domain of darkness, defeated the powers that held us captive, and brought us into His kingdom. This wasn’t a negotiation. It was a deliverance. Jesus didn’t just show us the way out—He carried us out.

So the kingdom we now belong to is radically different. It’s the kingdom of the beloved Son, a kingdom of light, life, and love. In this kingdom, we are no longer slaves to self and sin. We are no longer defined by our past. We are sons and daughters of the King, with all the rights and privileges that come with being in His family. We are partakers of His glory.

And how did this happen? Through salvation and redemption. Jesus paid the price for our freedom. You are no longer who you used to be. You’ve been transferred from darkness to light, from death to life, from slavery to sonship. Live by this freedom and identity in Christ.
